Cross Roads: A Republican Journey

I am a conservative.  I am actually quite conservative.  I think homosexuality is wrong, taxes should be low or non-existent, parents should parent, schools should allow prayer, that God is great, that we should all take responsibility for our actions, that government should exist to protect us from crime and outside attack, and so on.  I make no apologies for these stances because I know they are the right way to live and everyone will be better off if they adopt such beliefs.

I am also a Republican, which probably goes without saying since Republicans have become associated with conservatism very clearly.  The party has become the vehicle by which conservative philosophies have been pushed through our government and society.  And the party is now at a cross-roads.

The party is at a point where it must make some terribly important decisions, and the conservatives that have helped carry the party must also make some important decisions.  We must, together, or apart, must choose which direction to go.  Republicans need to decide if they wish to continue to embrace the conservative view point, and conservatives must decide how much to tolerate from a left-moving party.

In many ways, they two exist together, but it is becoming clear that an inevetible split will occur.  This will happen because the party is by its nature driven to win elections.  The movement will break because the party no longer identifies with their values.  Can either exist on its own?  I don't think they can for long.  But of the two, if both should fall, one can continue on, as the conservative movement can continue to win.

Personally, I think no matter the name, the conservative movement will continue on, and we might take some hits, and we might lose some ground, but by and large, we will continue.  But this is also subject to how others choose to move ahead.  We are at a cross roads, and we must choose which way we are to move ahead.  How to do it?  Start with getting the right people in place to make change...
