My passing scene is pretty focused right now. And it is rare that I get to put much thought into current affairs. But I saw these two things today and had to comment.
On the Today show, they got ahold of the last two years of Sarah Palin's tax returns, and criticized her for saying she was a middle class person. This irked me. First of all, she is currently a governor, not exactly a low paying job. Secondly, somewhere in the piece, toward the end, they gave a blurb that there had to be some lulls in her income. In other words, they haven't always made over $100k. Call me crazy, but relying on two years of tax returns when she is a governor to establish that despite her middle class claims, she's nothing but a typical rich politician, and admitting that she hasn't always made that money strikes me as a not only poor analytical thinking, but biased thinking.
The second item was (probably been on for weeks) an Obama commercial where he told the story of how his mom, at her death, was more worried about medical bills than anything else. I found this in poor taste, using such a person story for political points. I don't know her entire story, but I'd betcha there was some embellishment on BO's part. This stinks all the more. I've tried to think about what I'd think of a conservative using such a story, and I think I'd probably feel the same way.
Alas, back to criminal law and State v Rose. Actually a bizarre case. A guy gets off of a charge of manslaughter when he drove off with another guy stuck underneath his car because the state charged that action as the cause of death, but the defense argued that couldn't be the case because the other guy died when the defendant hit him with the car, not when he drove off.
Till next time...
